Boeing withdraws pay offer after failed negotiations with striking union By Reuters

(Reuters) – Boeing said on Tuesday it had withdrawn its wage offer to about 33,000 striking workers at factories on the U.S. West Coast and that no further negotiations were planned with their union representatives.

“Unfortunately, the union has not seriously considered our proposals,” Boeing (NYSE: ) Commercial Airplanes chief Stephanie Pope said in a memo to employees, calling the union’s demands “non-negotiable.”

“Further negotiations do not make sense at this time and our offer has been withdrawn.”

The union wants a 40 percent pay rise over four years and the restoration of a defined benefit pension that was taken away by contract a decade ago.

Boeing last month made an improved offer it described as the “best and final” that would give workers a 30 percent raise and restore a performance bonus, but the union said a survey of its members found that it was not enough.

The International Association of Machinists and Aeronautics Workers union said in a statement that Boeing was “committed to accepting the non-negotiated offer” proposed last month.

“They have refused to offer any raises, vacation/medical leave, advancement, ratification bonus, or 401k Match/SCRC contribution. Also, they would not reintroduce the defined benefit pension,” it says.
