ITV’s I’m A Celebrity pledges to ‘go down a different path’ under new Ofcom rules

ITV’s I’m A Celebrity is to implement a new ‘ban’ with new Ofcom rules following appearances by Nigel Farage and Matt Hancock. The ITV show is set to return in November, but the close timing of the general election in the second half of 2024 means MPs or former politicians are unlikely to appear.

A source said: “It was already very doubtful that another political guy would be chosen for I’m A Celeb after the backlash last time, particularly with Farage, but also the Hancock backlash. They also change the manual every year to keep things fresh.

“The timing of the general election is too much of a headache and it was the last straw. Of course, casting is in its early stages and never say never, but it’s extremely unlikely to go down that road.”

Ofcom’s director of broadcasting, Cristina Nicolotti Squires, told BBC Radio 4: “If broadcasters want to take the risk of having a high-profile politician who doesn’t hold a seat to host a programme, they will have to work hard to make sure those programs are properly impartial. And we will come upon them like a ton of bricks (if they are not).”

The source added: “Any Westminster type will find it impossible not to stray from policy under questioning from campmates and it would be almost impossible to remain neutral on air. It’s a headache they don’t have to risk, especially since there are plenty of non-MP celebrities who want to be on the show.

“Manufacturers are very excited this year with some of the big names that have already shown interest.” Coronation Street star Alan Halsall has so far been linked with this year’s series. An ITV spokesman said: “Any name suggested for I’m A Celebrity is speculation.”
