North Dakota officials are issuing wildfire guidance

In the wake of the weekend’s wildfires that ravaged parts of North Dakota, Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread and State Fire Marshal Doug Nelson are reminding residents of steps to protect themselves and their property during the recovery process.

“The wildfires they saw in parts of our state were heartbreaking. If your property has experienced fire damage, understanding your coverage and taking appropriate action can help minimize losses and headaches during the claims process,” said Godfread. “I would also like to thank the first responders and those who are fighting these fires. As of 2023, approximately 92% of firefighters are volunteers. These dedicated public servants work hard to protect life, limb and property, and we appreciate their efforts.”

Nelson stressed the importance of prioritizing safety before returning to any fire-damaged property. “The traces of a fire can present significant hazards. It is critical that residents understand these risks and take precautions to protect themselves and their families.”

Nelson advises residents to wait for approval from local authorities before returning to their property. He notes that residents should exercise caution when entering damaged structures and inspect for any signs of structural weakness. Property owners should also check utilities to ensure that gas lines or electrical wiring have not been compromised.

Godfread offers the following steps to those affected by bushfires:

  • Report any damage to your insurance company as soon as possible. Standard homeowners and renters insurance policies cover fire and smoke damage.
  • Damage to documents both inside and outside of your property before making repairs and create a detailed inventory of damaged goods. Your insurance company may require proof of ownership, so having receipts or proof of purchase can help the process.
  • Secure your property to mitigate any other damage such as covering holes or broken glass.
  • Understand the additional living expenses cover, which can cover hotel stays or meals if your home is uninhabitable due to damage.

Godfread also urges consumers to review their insurance policies to ensure there is adequate coverage for natural disasters such as wildfires.
