The price of charging an electric vehicle in Europe

  • The cost of charging an electric vehicle at public charging stations in Europe varies significantly by country, with Iceland, Portugal and Finland offering the most affordable rates.
  • Norway and Slovenia have the highest EV charging costs, despite Norway’s high share of renewable energy, due to factors such as higher global energy prices.
  • Countries with a higher reliance on renewable energy sources generally have lower EV charging costs, while those with expensive energy imports tend to have higher prices.

This graph, via Pallavi Rao of Visual Capitalist, shows the average cost of charging an electric car for 25 minutes per 100 km at a public station in various European countries. The data comes from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), from 2024.

To account for the difference between electric cars, a Tesla Model 3 was considered for this data set.

Price information was obtained from public DC fast charging stations.

EAFO then calculated an average price per country.

Euronews reports that of Iceland abundant renewable energy sources reduce the charging price of electric vehicles.

On the other hand, in Norway and Slovenia charging costs increase to EUR 17-19 per 100 km. Of course, these values also reflect electricity sources, energy prices and taxes in the country. In Norway, for example, prices are 25% more expensive than the EU average.

In general, countries with a higher share of renewable energy have lower prices, while countries with expensive energy imports (that Germany) have higher prices.

The adoption of electric vehicles has steadily increased worldwide. Norway leads with an 80% share of electric vehicles in all cars sold in 2023. Of the top four countries after EV adoption, three are from Europe.

As home to some of the world’s wealthiest countries, Europe has the capacity to create the charging infrastructure that is essential to increasing the use of electric cars.

In 2012, the adoption rate of electric vehicles in Norway was 3%. In 2024, it is closer to 90% Check out Norway’s EV market continues to charge forward by the creator of Chartr to see how the tide has turned.
