Bodybuilding mom, 36, fears she won’t live to be 50 after diagnosis

A bodybuilding mum fears she won’t live to see her 50s – after being diagnosed with a rare joint condition. Tracy Kiss, 36, has always put her flexibility and high energy levels down to being fit and healthy.

When he took up bodybuilding at 29, he “didn’t think much” about spraining his joints – which happened at least once a month. But when a stranger noticed her double joints and told her to get checked, she went to the doctors to find out what was going on.

In May, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) – a rare group of conditions that affect the joints, skin and heart. Certain types of the condition have a life expectancy of 48 years, and Tracy fears she won’t live to see her children marry, have children or succeed in their careers.

Mum-of-two Tracy, a marketer from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, said: “I’m very fit – but I could have a ticking time bomb in my chest – as many EDS patients suffer from heart problems. I always put my poor joints to be really healthy – I exercise my muscles all the time.

“It’s worrying to know that I’ve gone my whole life without conclusive treatments or diagnoses – EDS became something I had to live with.”

Tracy had always been fit and healthy before becoming a bodybuilder – going for regular bike rides and runs. But after giving birth to her first son, aged 12, she began training and competing professionally.

She had had PIP breast implants for seven years – before they broke when her son was born, leaving her without any upper body strength. And he turned to weight training as a way to cope.

“I was physically weak,” she said. “I couldn’t even have a cup of tea. I decided to turn to fitness as a way to get stronger – and lose some weight.
