If you have these norovirus symptoms, then “don’t go to work”

A ‘very nasty’ disease is spreading across Britain, sparking a ‘don’t go to work’ warning. Norovirus cases were said to be “elevated for this time of year” without the usual spring decline.

The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) said those who contract the virus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, should avoid going to work, school or nursery for at least 48 hours after stopping symptoms. Hospitals and care homes should also be avoided during this time.

Amy Douglas, UKHSA norovirus epidemiologist, said: “Norovirus can cause dehydration, particularly in vulnerable groups such as young children and older or immunosuppressed people, so if you do get sick it’s important to drink plenty of fluids . If you have diarrhea and vomiting. , you can take steps to avoid transmitting the infection.”

Washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water will help stop the spread of infection. The UKHSA warned that alcohol hand gels will not kill the virus, so they should not be “relied on alone”. Bleach-based products should also be used to clean surfaces in the home.

The NHS said norovirus could be “very unpleasant but usually clears up in about two days”. The full list of symptoms can be found below.
