The airport’s rule change in June will see some people pay five times as much

Tourists traveling from major UK airports will spend almost twice as much on travel essentials compared to those flying from airports that have dropped the 100ml rule. Only London City, Teesside and Aberdeen Airport installed new 3D scanners in time for the summer holidays.

This comes despite all airports initially saying they would have the scanners by June.

By digging through historical price data for hundreds of personal care products, price comparison website idealo.co.uk found that travel minis cost, on average, 218% more than full-size products per ml .

A 500ml bottle of Listerine mouthwash can be picked up online for just £1, but a 95ml equivalent costs the same. This means that tourists restricted by the 100ml limit will pay up to five times more per ml and get less product for their pound.

When it comes to hair care, £2.25 is the average price for a small 50ml Batiste dry shampoo, which is four times more expensive than the 200ml option. Without the 100ml rule, shoppers can get their hands on an extra 150ml for just 1p more.

For warm-weather essentials like sunscreen and moisturizers, travel-size products are on average twice the price of larger quantities. For example, a 100ml bottle of Ultrasun SPF 30 costs £14, but for just £5 more, shoppers could get double the protection.

With searches for ‘holiday essentials 100ml’ trending up on Google in the last 30 days, Katy Phillips, Senior Brand and Communications Manager at idealo.co.uk, has offered advice on how to cut costs while staying within the restrictions of liquids still in effect this summer. .

  • Check online for deals where you can buy mini items in bulk. Retailers often offer 2-4-1 and buy one, get one free discounts that can lower the total price of your store.
  • Invest in reusable travel-sized containers that can be filled from full-size bottles you already have around the house.
  • Preparation is key, don’t leave it too late to buy your holiday essentials. Set alerts on products that can inform of price drops.

Katy said: “Holiday toiletry shopping can often end up being expensive once you factor in daily hygiene, sun care and other items such as bug repellent. Looking at our data, it’s clear to see that the 100ml rule creates another barrier when it comes to keeping costs down before the holidays.
