Brenden Aaronson’s time at Union Berlin appears to be over and he will return to Leeds United this summer after helping the German side avoid relegation on the final day.

Away from the incredible scenes of Leeds booking their place at Wembley for the play-off final, those on loan are also seeing their seasons come to an end.

For Union Berlin’s Brenden Aaronson, he went into the final Bundesliga game of the season at the weekend knowing his side needed to win to avoid a relegation play-off clash.

Aaronson helps Union Berlin avoid relegation

A clash with Freiburg on the final day of the season required Union to get a win to see them move out of the bottom three, and their chances were boosted by Bochum losing.

It was a crazy end to the game with Union opening the scoring in the 68th minute when Aaronson sent Benedict Hollerbach through for a good first goal of the game.

However, Ritsu Doan threw the Union into trouble with an 85th minute equalizer but a stoppage-time penalty sealed victory after Kevin Volland’s initial effort was not converted, seeing the rebound drop to Janik Harberer to score a winner.

Such a result sees Union Berlin avoid a dreaded two-leg relegation playoff against third-placed in the second leg.

Union Berlin confirm Aaronson’s exit this summer

With the season over, Union Berlin have confirmed on their official website that three players are leaving.

Aaronson is one of them, with his segment in the piece titled:

“American loan prodigy – Brenden Aaronson returns to England”

The report then says:

Brenden Aaronson joined 1. FC Union Berlin on loan from relegated Premier League Leeds United in the last summer transfer window, winning the hearts of Union fans with his extraordinary style of play, speed and, not to forget, his decisive goal against TSG. 1899 Hoffenheim.

After 38 appearances, two goals and two assists, his time in Berlin is over and he is returning to England.

Aaronson won’t really be welcome at Leeds

Aaronson apparently didn’t do enough in the Union to warrant a permanent move, given that his production has remained pretty dismal.

We have a problem now because we have an expensive asset who has proven to be substandard in both the Premier League and the Bundesliga.

He could have done himself and his form a lot of favors by staying put, but he decided to jump ship and it was the other way around.
