Nuneaton bomb squad incident sees man named and charged over ‘chemical incident’

A man has been charged in connection with an alleged chemical incident in Nuneaton. It comes after police spent most of the weekend at a property in Shakespeare Drive.

At one point, the bomb squad were spotted in the area. Warwickshire Police said it was responding to concerns that a man had access to dangerous chemicals.



It followed reports of a man believed to be mixing chemicals on the tarmac at an industrial site in Attleborough Fields, Warwickshire Police said. The chemicals were traced to an alleged theft in Worcestershire on May 16, police said.

Jonah Smith, 27, of Shakespeare Drive in Nuneaton, was charged with arson, burglary and criminal damage under £5,000. A 28-year-old man from Nuneaton was also arrested in connection with the incident yesterday afternoon.

He has been bailed until August while inquiries continue. Smith is due to face the three charges at Coventry Magistrates Court today, Monday 20 May.
