Electric vehicle battery brand launches in Coventry

A new electric vehicle (EV) battery brand, Volklec, has launched in the UK and will operate from Coventry.

Backed by UK investment company Frontive Group, Volklec represents an investment in the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

Volklec batteries will be developed and work with the UK Battery Industrialization Center (UKBIC).

The collaboration is part of the UK’s drive to advance technology in the electric vehicle battery sector and provide the skills needed to grow it.

Volklec aims to produce durable batteries for various types of vehicles, including on-road, off-highway and tracked vehicles.

Working with UKBIC, Volklec plans to tailor its batteries to meet the specific needs of the UK automotive market, with a particular focus on niche and low-volume vehicle manufacturers.

The collaboration between Volklec and UKBIC is expected to create employment opportunities in the West Midlands and contribute to the UK’s battery research, development and manufacturing capabilities, ultimately aiming for large-scale battery production.

Imran Khatri, founder of Volklec, said: “Volklec has been around for many months and has made a significant investment, set out to help decarbonise the UK. As a proud UK investment, our initial focus is on the automotive industry, providing security of supply to the sector, then we intend to look at the wider electrification markets as well.”

UKBIC Managing Director Sean Gilgunn said: “We are delighted to welcome Volklec to UKBIC and become their launch pad here in the heart of the UK automotive industry. Our purpose-built facility is where companies can develop their battery manufacturing processes to the scale they need to move to industrial production.

“This agreement marks the beginning of Volklec’s journey to create a battery with the potential to scale to significant volumes in the coming years and we are proud to support the business in the initial phase of their development. Volume cell manufacturing is vital to ensure the UK thrives from the energy transition to Net Zero, and this agreement further demonstrates UKBIC’s unique value to the battery ecosystem.”
