3 midfielders Sheffield Wednesday must watch amid summer exodus

Sheffield Wednesday have a busy transfer window and it looks like midfield is an area that needs a few signings.

Sheffield Wednesday fans are still nervously waiting to see manager Danny Rohl’s fate confirmed amid talk of his future, but regardless of who is at the helm, a busy summer awaits.

Plenty of signings will be needed if the Owls are to move up the Championship table and one area that looks to be in need of a revamp is the midfield.

There is a bit of an exodus in the middle of the park at Hillsborough. Talks are ongoing to retain legend Barry Bannan and key man Will Vaulks, but Tyreeq Bakinson and George Byers have been released while the loans of Momo Diaby and Jeff Hendrick come to an end.

For this reason, the club will have to look at some middle options. Here, we have proposed three that Sheffield Wednesday should take note of.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Ivan Sunjic – Birmingham City

It has been confirmed that Sunjic will leave Birmingham City this summer and while it wouldn’t be a surprise if there was interest abroad, Championship clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday should be watching the Croatian.

On a free transfer, the hard-working midfielder could be a canny signing for the Owls. He is more than familiar with Championship football and can operate as either a central midfielder or a defensive midfielder.

Lewis Warrington – Everton

Warrington’s fate has yet to be confirmed, but it seems highly likely that he will leave Everton this summer when his contract expires. This is sure to spark interests in the EFL.

Struggled for game time during a spell with Championship rivals Plymouth Argyle in the first half of the season, but with another shot at the second tier, Warrington are able to really hit the ground running.

The 21-year-old has previously played in League One and could be ready to move to a permanent home. Under a manager like Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday could be a great place for him to develop.

Robin Heusser – SV Wehen Wiesbaden

More of a left-wing option would be 25-year-old midfielder Heusser, who currently plays for relegation-threatened 2. Bundesliga side SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

Rohl’s German connections could come in handy in the transfer market, and a Heusser would be a really smart signing. On a struggling team, he has one goal and nine assists in 35 games this season.

Heusser has been a source of creativity throughout his career, but having spent his entire career to date in Germany, a move abroad to Hillsborough could be tempting.
