There is usually ample scrutiny of who could be on the wrong end of a Super League disciplinary verdict, however with just two Challenge Cup games this weekend it means there is less to assess.

The lack of games didn’t mean a lack of tries, with both men’s Challenge Cup semi-finals being knock-outs. Two of the four sides tied at the top of the Super League showed why they are in that position as they dispatched their rivals.

Wigan Warriors beat Hull KR 38-6 on Saturday, with Robins never really getting into the game and simply compounding error after error to allow Matt Peet’s side to take ascendancy.

Wigan were without one of their starting props for that game after last week’s Super League disciplinary hearing found Liam Byrne worthy of a two-match ban. The Ireland international was blocked for the first tackle of the game against Huddersfield Giants, but Wigan didn’t miss him as they piled on the points.

As for Sunday’s game, neither man was suspended and Huddersfield actually saw the return of signing Adam Swift. They were looking to respond after defeat to Wigan the week before, but Warrington put them to the sword.

In a run of seven tries, Sam Burgess’ side went to Wembley with a 46-10 win to set up a delicious clash between Wigan and themselves.

Ironically, the teams will be playing in Super League the week before the Challenge Cup Final, which could see both teams lining up with their reserves to avoid any risk of wrath from the Super League disciplinary system.

The same cannot be said this week, however, with the same Super League disciplinary process set to be launched after a series of incidents over the weekend.

The only team to escape today’s Match Review Panel without a ban could be Warrington Wolves, however, with a melee and then a scuffle later in their win against the Giants, the Panel will be paying close attention to ensure that there are no indiscretions.

For Huddersfield, however, Jake Connor was one of the main antagonists, the defender pushing Josh Thewlis over the advertising boards to set up the first melee. Ten minutes later he refused to let the winger play the ball, shoving Thewlis in the face and then attacking once the pair got to their feet.

Liam Moore sent Connor for ten, but there could be more for him, meanwhile, and Thewlis’ actions will certainly be scrutinized. Another Giants player sure to be watched is Tui Lolohea, with the Tongan playmaker dragging Matty Nicholson to the ground in the opening seconds after Connor and Thewlis’ first incident. Those actions led to the brawl.

As for Saturday’s game, two players were shown yellow, with Aussie centers Tom Opacic and Adam Keighran on the run, the ball before the bags were dropped as both men found their feet. More could be said about this, but the man who may be most at risk is Hull KR’s other centre.

Footage emerged online of Kiwi Peta Hiku aggressively falling on Jai Field before shoving his shoulder into the Aussie’s head in an incident which Hull KR academy coach Jason Netherton has since clarified on social media was not a failure, but β€œit should have been a red. card.”
