Busy weekend for the RNLI Whitby team

It was a busy weekend for Whitby RNLI volunteers with celebrations and a shout out.

On Friday, two of the station’s volunteers, Ally and Jamie, as well as station chairman Mike, headed to Wakefield for the 200th anniversary celebrations.

Volunteer crew member Ally Brisby said:

“We had a fantastic evening at Wakefield Cathedral celebrating the bicentenary of the RNLI. It was a true commemoration of our past, celebration of the present and inspiration for the future.

We had musical interludes from Wakefield Grammar School, the String Quartet and Brass Quintet, vocal arrangements by the acappella group Ensemble Pro Victoria and divine performances by the Wakefield Cathedral Choir.’

Meanwhile, the crew of the old rowing boat William Riley were heading to the south coast from Poole to take part in the Poole Lifeboat Festival, with some of Whitby’s volunteer crew traveling to support them.

Barry Brown, Station Manager of Whitby RNLI and Commanding Officer of the William Riley said:

“We were honored to be invited to the RNLI HQ in Poole to take part in this celebration of RNLI heritage. The parade of sails was a real highlight and it was exciting to see both modern and historic lifeboats taking to the water in Poole Harbour.

More than 50 lifeboats took part, including the former Whitby Lifeboat William Riley, one of the oldest boats there built in 1909.

We are very grateful that the charity’s support over the last 200 years has meant that our crew have the very latest technology, created right here in Poole, made specifically for the needs of the RNLI, enabling them to stay safe as life savers at sea.

Back in Whitby, RNLI volunteers were busy showing members of the public around the lifeboat and station as part of the town’s Fish and Ships festival.

Coxward Howard Fields said:

“I would like to thank the crew for giving up their time this weekend to welcome members of the public to the station, the comments and feedback that followed are testament to their efforts and show how passionate our volunteers are about the RNLI and Lifesaving lives. like the sea

We’re very proud of our post and it’s a real pleasure to open our doors and welcome our family of supporters – thank you to everyone who visited.’

As the weekend drew to a close, the crew was called to an outcry.

Release authority Stephen Upright said:

“The all-weather lifeboat was assigned to assist a commercial fishing boat that had suffered a mechanical failure. The boat was located two miles north of the harbor entrance and was towed and moored at the fish wharf.

A happy ending to a busy weekend.
