Leeds United face a major transfer decision after the forward’s ‘decisive’ loan

Brenden Aaronson’s time with Union Berlin is over. The German club have confirmed that the American international is returning to Leeds United following the end of his season-long loan spell.

Aaronson left Elland Road last summer, triggering a clause in his contract to leave the West Yorkshire club following the club’s relegation to the Championship. He established himself as a first-team regular at the Bundesliga club, scoring two goals in 38 appearances.

The American international picked up an assist in his last outing with Union Berlin to help them to a 2-1 win over Freiburg. The result secured Union Berlin’s Bundesliga status, ensuring they avoided a dreaded two-leg relegation play-off against the third-placed side in the second leg.

A statement from the Union Berlin club said: “Brenden Aaronson joined 1. FC Union Berlin on loan from relegated Premier League side Leeds United in the last summer transfer window, winning the hearts of Union fans with his extraordinary playing style, speed and, not to forget, his decisive goal against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

“After 38 appearances, two goals and two assists, his time in Berlin has come to an end and he is returning to England.”

It remains unclear what the future holds for Aaronson. The 23-year-old made it clear last month that he would be open to a permanent move to Union Berlin.

Will the versatile forward be part of Daniel Farke’s long-term plans, regardless of which division United operate in next year? A recent report by Football Insider claimed that United are planning to sell Aaronson this summer and are looking to recoup the £12m they paid for his services.
