Statement that 62 tonnes are on fire at Sheffield landfill

Five fire crews were sent to fight a huge fire in Sheffield yesterday.

The smoke cleared across the city on Sunday (May 19) as fire crews tackled the blaze, which involved around 62 tonnes of waste.

Crews from Parkway, Central, Elm Lane, Rivelin and Tankersley stations were in attendance. An aerial ladder was also used to help extinguish the fire.

It took crews more than six hours to battle the blaze, as did nearby residents warned by firefighters to stay inside and keep their windows and doors closed closed. The fire crews left the scene at 23.52.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Crews from Parkway, Central, Elm Lane and Rivelin stations, along with an aerial ladder from Parkway and a high volume pump from Tankersley, attended a fire involving approximately 62 tonnes of waste yesterday late afternoon (Sunday, May 19).

“Crews used three ground monitors and the aerial ladder to successfully extinguish the fire. They left the scene at 11:52 p.m.

“We would like to pass on well done to all crews and control personnel for the swift resolution of this incident.”
