Many people have experienced strange smelling water. (Jordyn Davis/Bham Now)

People in the Vestavia/Hoover area are upset – and with good reason. The water in their area has been reported to have a strange smell and taste.

Read on to find out why this is.

The problem is Geosmin

You might be wondering, what the heck is Geosmin? According to Birmingham Water Works (BWW), Geosmin is a natural compound that is responsible for the unpleasant smell. We spoke to BWW about the issue and here’s what they had to say:

“Geosmin is what gives grapes, wines, beets, mushrooms and fresh carrots their earthy smell and taste. Drinking water utilities around the world that use rivers, lakes and streams as sources of drinking water production often have fluctuations in Geosmin levels due to seasonal changes, especially in the spring.”

Rick Jackson, Public Relations Manager, Birmingham Water Works

According to Jackson, as of Saturday, these are the areas that have been flagged for concern:

  • North Hoover
  • Portions of the Vestavian Hills
  • The mountain stream
  • UAB

The water is safe to drink

While people have been given the green light to drink the water, some still can’t get over the smell. BWW addresses the problem of water sampling and washing. Expect to have odor-free water for the next few days.
