The Wrexham boss piles the pressure on Birmingham City ahead of the League One clash

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is looking forward to becoming the underdog again in a pond where Birmingham City will be the biggest fish.

Hollywood-backed Wrexham will meet the Blues in League One next season after back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two. The Welsh side will be one to watch in the third tier under experienced boss Parkinson, 56, but he insists the Blues and some of the other big players will be under a lot more pressure.

Parkinson told YouTube channel Men In Blazers: “Coming into League One is very exciting because now we’re coming into a league with a lot of teams that have recent experience in the Championship and the Premier League. We’ve managed a couple of teams at the top of that division with a lot of expectation on them, so for us it’s quite good to go into a division where it’s not ‘Wrexham we’re going to win it and we’re favourites’.

“There will be teams under a lot of pressure in that division, like Birmingham for example, who have gone down. Rotherham and Huddersfield will also be expected by their fans to be right at the top of the table.

“It will be nice to be a bit under the radar next season, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t ambitious to build a team ready to compete this summer.”

Wrexham’s rise has been bankrolled by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney since taking over in 2021. Matches between the Blues and Wrexham are likely to be selected to be shown by Sky Sports on their new Sky Sports+ channel.
