More than Mbappe… the former Manchester United man finishes top of Ligue 1 in assists

Manchester United are blessed with one of the best creative players in the league, but a succession plan is still unclear.

One of Manchester United’s main mistakes in recent seasons is that the team relied too much on Bruno Fernandes.

This was revealed in the last few league games Fernandes missed through injury, where United failed to score and mustered just four shots on target in 180 minutes.

One player who was right there at Carrington was exciting academy prospect Angel Gomes, who left the club on a free transfer in 2020, with Gomes later explaining that the club had not provided a development plan.

Angel Gomes leads Ligue 1 for assists

Angel Gomes signed for Ligue 1 side Lille, who gave him exactly what he was missing, a plan. He was loaned for one season to the Portuguese team Boavista, and later gradually integrated into the Lille team.

Last season he enjoyed his best season to date as Lille pipped Nice to fourth place and Champions League qualification, a financial success for United’s current investors Ineos.

As the Ligue 1 season came to a close, Angel Gomes finished at the top of the Ligue 1 assist charts.

Although eight assists sounds modest, it was a figure that no one in the French top flight has surpassed, not even Kylian Mbappe.

Gomes, 23, is the youngest player to record eight assists. He has managed to do so with a high level of efficiency, not even in the top 10 in the division for chances created.

Manchester United are monitoring Angel Gomes

Angel Gomes is still on the same contract he signed with Lille in 2020. That means he only has one year left.

Manchester United are monitoring his situation and progress, TBR Football reported, along with Aston Villa and Tottenham.

It is unclear whether Gomes will consider a return to Manchester United, the club would need to demonstrate that there is a clear first-team plan for him unlike last time.

Gomes remains Manchester United’s youngest ever player, having made his debut under Jose Mourinho. Could he still return to eventually follow Bruno Fernandes? Don’t rule it out.
