Thunderstorm Warning as 2 inches of rain could fall on Tuesday

“Heavy” storms and rain will hit parts of south-west England and Northern Ireland. Up to 2 inches of rain could fall in a few hours in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Plymouth, Somerset, Torbay and western parts of Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Frequent lightning and hail can also be seen, the Met Office’s yellow storm warnings said. Both warnings last until 9pm on Tuesday.

They say people should expect possible spray and flash flooding, which can cause power outages, transport cancellations and damage to buildings.

Amy Bokota, a Met Office forecaster, said: “The rain could be slow and that’s the main problem, the wind is quite light at the moment so when it builds it could be quite slow and heavy.” .

She added: “Where you see them, they could be quite intense and dramatic, but they won’t see them everywhere, and some places right down the road could be completely fine and free of rain and storms.”

It will come before an area of low pressure approaches the UK from the east on Wednesday, bringing heavy and prolonged rain to eastern parts of the country.
