“Many injured and one dead” after “severe turbulence” hit a plane after leaving the UK

At least one person has died and 20 others have been injured after a plane taking off from London hit severe turbulence, reports suggest. Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London to Singapore was forced to make an emergency landing following the incident.

The Boeing 777 aircraft left the UK on Monday evening at 22:17 local time. However, it had to make an emergency landing in Thailand after hitting severe turbulence. Extreme tropical storms are being reported in the region, the Mirror reports.

The aircraft, registered 9V-SWM, was diverted to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, where it made an emergency landing shortly before 4pm local time. It was scheduled to land at Singapore Changi Airport at 18:10 local time.

Ambulances were photographed on the tarmac next to the plane. Local media reported that one passenger died and around 20 others were injured, leading to the emergency landing.

The Mirror has contacted Singapore Airlines for comment.
