Lambeth’s second Labor councilor has been confirmed as a general election candidate, with Cllr Marianna Masters having political ambitions elsewhere

Another Lambeth Labor councilor has ambitions outside the borough, having been selected as Labour’s candidate for St Neots and Mid-Cambridgeshire at the next general election.

Cllr Marianna Masters, one of the current two Labor councilors for Streatham Wells, is eyeing the Tory seat to fulfill her career political ambitions.

The neighboring Streatham Common and Vale ward has recently seen a similar situation. Cllr Tom Rutland fancied his chances of being the next MP for East Worthing and Shoreham.

After months of ignoring pleas from his residents to quit Lambeth, Rutland finally resigned as a Lambeth councilor in March this year.

The by-election that followed earlier this month saw Labor retain its seat. Cllr Sarah Cole received 2,269 votes. The nearest challenger was LibDem Nicolas Davidson with 596 votes.

Rutland has set a precedent when it comes to political ambition. After being absent from Lambeth operations and going AWOL in the neighborhood, he finally did right by its residents.

Some suspect that he had hopes of a general election in May and could stay in Lambeth and hedge his bets.

With the next General Election expected to take place in five months, it will be interesting to see if Cllr Masters follows the example set by her party colleague.

Streatham Wells is a two-member ward. Cllr Masters is joined by her Labor colleague Cllr Malcom Clark.

Representing the ward as a single councilor for the next five months will be a tough ask for Cllr Clark if his colleague is campaigning elsewhere.
