Talking point: Should Tulse Hill be renamed?

London’s Tulse Hill could be set for a name change, fittingly rEPORTSafter a survey was launched by Lambeth council asking residents for their views on the nomenclature which is linked to Sir Henry Tulse – whose family made their fortune in the slave trade.

The council’s survey aims to find out if residents want to change their name completely, display information, if an education initiative should be launched or if they want to do nothing.

A spokesman for Lambeth Council said it was working to assess local sites and their possible links to colonialism following the Black Lives Matter campaign.

They added: “Lambeth is a rich and diverse borough and the council has been a pioneer since the 1980s in naming new places and new buildings to reflect local people.

Streets in the area were also named after Henry Richard Vassall-Fox and his wife Elizabeth Webster, both of whom owned slaves.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s plan to diversify British road names is part of his fund of one million Untold Stories.

Khan said: “London’s diversity is its greatest strength, but for far too long our capital’s statues, street names and buildings have shown only a limited insight into our city’s complex history.
