Police warning as Ainley Top issues lorry crash update

Police have issued a statement as an overturned lorry continues to cause traffic chaos on a busy Huddersfield roundabout this morning.

Dramatic footage showed the lorry on its side at the Ainley Top roundabout, appearing to have dropped its load. Bumper to bumper, traffic blocks all exits from the roundabout.




The incident happened at around 6.34am today (Tuesday, May 21), blocking the road and Halifax Road. Since then, traffic has developed on all approaches to the roundabout.

Roads have reopened to traffic in towards Huddersfield but remain closed to traffic out of the town centre. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the A629 at Ainley Top at around 6.34am to reports of an overturned lorry. No injuries were reported and partner agencies responded to clear the debris.

“The roundabout has now reopened to Huddersfield-bound traffic but remains closed to outbound traffic. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible while work to resolve the situation and fully reopen the roads continues.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “There has been a road traffic accident at the Ainley Top roundabout this morning, blocking the road and Halifax Road. Emergency services are at the scene and West Yorkshire Police are trying to open the left lane as soon as possible. Please avoid and use alternative routes.”

Traffic data site Inrix said: “A629 Halifax Road Northbound blocked, heavy traffic due to overturned lorry between Yew Tree Road and A643 Lindley Moor Road (Ainley Top Roundabout).
