Simon Jordan makes his Birmingham City manager’s admission and aims to dig in at Knighthead

Simon Jordan believes “there will be a lot of takers” for the Birmingham City job – but has also warned the club to chase points, not plaudits next season.

The Blues are looking for a fourth manager of the Knighthead era after Tony Mowbray stepped down to prioritize his health. Mowbray, 60, initially left his Blues duties in February to undergo treatment for an unspecified illness.

His absence was an insurmountable final blow to the Blues’ season as the club were relegated from the Championship. Mowbray’s replacement will be tasked with getting the Blues out of League One at the first attempt.

The club’s owners, American investment firm Knighthead, want to take the Blues to the Premier League and have plans to build a Sports Quarter in the second city. But their footballing decisions last season, namely the appointment of Wayne Rooney over John Eustace, cost the club Championship status.

“It doesn’t matter what you do off the pitch,” said Jordan, the former owner of Crystal Palace. “You can live in this world of things off the pitch for a while, but if you relegate your club from the Championship to League One then you are responsible for that.

“All these guys did was miss a year. But make no mistake, owning a club in your first season is not easy. We did something similar and got out of relegation on the last day of the season. But we didn’t put out a manager who was sixth in the league.
