Wigan Warriors take a decision on their appeal after accepting two bans

Wigan Warriors Head Coach Matt Peet speaks to the media.

Following the match review committee’s decisions yesterday, Wigan Warriors were the biggest losers, putting their semi-final win on hold.

Wigan looked strong against Hull KR with their excellent display resulting in a 38-6 win, booking their place at Wembley for next month’s final.

Despite Jake Connor’s actions possibly causing two melees in Huddersfield Giants v Warrington Wolves, Wigan were the only side to be charged.

Kaide Ellis received a one game ban for Grade B Dangerous Contact and Sam Walters also received a one game ban for Grade B Head Contact.

Both were at the higher end of the sanction scale due to previous indiscretions.

Luke Thompson was fined £250 for the grade B dangerous contact charge as he was not at the top end of the penalty scale.

After those decisions, the Warriors made a decision on whether to appeal.

The RFL has confirmed to Serious About Rugby League that the Cherry Whites have decided not to challenge any of the three decisions over the weekend, meaning both Kaide Ellis and Sam Walters will miss their trip to Salford on Sunday.

This looks like a much-needed boost for Paul Rowley’s side, who need things to go their way after a heavy 40-12 defeat by Leigh Leopards in the last round of Super League.

Wigan could also be worried about this game as Salford are capable of beating the top sides: they have already beaten three of the top five sides in the table this season and could deliver a major shock.

If the Warriors end up losing, they may find it difficult to deal with.

Of course, it’s frustrating to be the only side to lose players from a round of games, especially when so much has happened elsewhere in the games, so much so that the RFL highlighted the number of incidents that didn’t lead to a Toll,

However, adding to that frustration will be the fact that Liam Byrne will miss the second of two games for Grade C Head Contact in a win over Huddersfield Giants.

He was booked, while in Castleford Tigers v St Helens both Liam Horne and Tommy Makinson were sent off for possible grade C incidents.

However, both used a loophole, which is explained here, which meant they did not miss a single first-team game.

That means he missed two games for the same penalty as two players who missed none at all.
