Leicestershire receives yellow warning of ‘heavy rain’ with risks of flooding and disruption

A yellow warning of rain with potential flooding has been issued for Leicestershire. Residents are urged to be prepared for outages ahead of significant rain.

The warning, issued by the Met Office, comes into effect overnight and is in place until early Thursday morning (May 23). The yellow rain warning covers large areas of the UK, from as far south as Milton Keynes to as far north as Wick in Scotland.

The whole of Leicestershire is under yellow warning, with the Met Office predicting the county will experience “heavy rain” from 0.15am on Wednesday morning (May 22). Forecasts suggest heavy rain is expected throughout the day.

In a statement, the Met Office said the yellow alert had been issued due to forecast heavy rain. It warned that the rain could lead to “some flooding” in parts of Leicestershire and the potential for travel disruption.

The Met Office also warned that rain could cut off “some communities”, localized spray and flooding could make driving conditions difficult and damage to buildings is also possible. There is also a warning for potential “fast-flowing” floodwaters, which pose potential life hazards.

In Wednesday’s forecast, the Met Office said all of Leicestershire was set for heavy rain throughout the day, with the only breaks to be lighter showers scheduled for around 12pm and 7pm. The heavy rains will then clear in the early hours of Thursday, with the yellow alert lifted at 6:00 a.m. on May 23.

Despite the heavy rain, forecasts suggest temperatures will still be around 15C on Wednesday. More information can be found on the Met Office website.
