Marc Albrighton admitted he was “99.9 per cent sure” his 10-year stay at Leicester City was over after lifting the Championship trophy on the final day of the season.

After being released by his boyhood club Aston Villa in 2014, the midfielder joined the Foxes and went on to win the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield and Championship with the club.

Former Leicester player Matt Piper looked back on his 34-year spell at the club on the When You’re Smiling podcast: “When it comes to the end of a player’s stay, you start thinking about the end. He has been part of everything that is great for the last 10 years.

“He was a big part of the Premier League title. He was a big part of winning the FA Cup. He scored his first goal in the Champions League.

“Generally, I’m more of a James Maddison and Riyad Mahrez person – they’re the players I like to watch. He’s not in that category of player with his skill set, but I appreciated his determination, fight,” never give up attitude and passing ability over the years.”

On the legacy Albrighton will leave at Leicester City, Piper added: “If you were to put up a Jamie Vardy statue, it would be nice to have an Albrighton one. Maybe it could be him crossing the ball to Vardy or something. I think he deserves this recognition.

“He’s been brilliant. He’s been a fan favorite since he’s been here. Almost every manager that’s come in hasn’t really liked him at first, but he’s always been able to change his mind and contribute massively.

“Now is probably the right time (for him to go), especially in Enzo’s system, because he’s not going to use him as much.

“He’s clearly a beloved member of the group, so he would have been strong for this season, but I don’t know how long you should continue that.

“He’s still got a lot to offer the game – maybe at another level, maybe in another country – but I think we should thank him for everything he’s done for us and let him move on.”
