Thunderstorm warnings are in place for parts of south-west and south-east England, East Anglia, Wales and Northern Ireland, with some areas at risk of flooding, lightning and hail.

The Met Office says up to two inches of rain could fall within hours in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and western parts of Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Two yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms are in place for south-west England and Northern Ireland until 9pm today.

The warning in Northern Ireland started at 8am, while the one covering much of south-west England started at midday.

Truro, Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton and Dorchester are also affected by the warning in England.

In Northern Ireland, Londonderry/Derry and Armagh are among the areas to be affected by the storms.

Ireland’s Met Eireann has issued an orange gale warning – meaning there could be a threat to life and property due to “rare and dangerous weather” – covering areas of the south-east until 8pm.

A yellow warning – for “potentially hazardous” conditions on a localized scale – is also in place for much of Ireland until 10pm.

Met Office forecaster Amy Bokotan said: “The rain could be slow moving and that’s the main problem – the wind is quite light at the moment so when it does form it could be quite slow and intense “.

She added: “Where you see them, they could be quite intense and dramatic, but they won’t see them everywhere, and some places just down the road could be completely fine and free of showers and thunderstorms.”
