Sainsbury’s issues statement after shots fired through Brixton store window

Sainsbury’s issued a statement after its store was forced to close last night when shots were fired, shattering a window.

Police were called Monday night around 10:00 p.m. to a report of shootings in Tulse Hill.

Police at the scene found evidence that a gun had been fired near Sainsbury’s in Brixton Water Lane with a broken window.

There were no injuries from the weapons, although one member of the audience bruised his knee after “falling to the floor”.

No arrests have been made and police inquiries are ongoing.

A police cordon was in place from 10pm, although according to AA Maps the incident was lifted this afternoon – 14 hours after the initial closure.

In a statement, Sainsbury’s confirmed the Brixton Water Lane branch was temporarily closed while police investigations were underway outside the premises yesterday.

The store has since reopened today following the incident.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “Our Brixton Water Lane store has been temporarily closed while police investigate an incident which took place outside the store yesterday evening.

“The store has now reopened and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Tulse Hill, SW2, shortly before 10pm on Monday 20 May to reports of shots being fired.

“Officers attended. Evidence of a firearm was discovered at the scene near a supermarket where a window had been smashed.

“There are no gunshot injuries, a member of the public shopping in the store crushed his knee after falling to the floor.

“There were no arrests. Research is ongoing.

“Any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101, quoting CAD 8518/20 May.”
