Liverpool sign son of Premier League cult hero after 90-goal season to continue trend

The Reds have already had several sons of former Premier League players. Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns and Bobby Clark all played in the latter part of the season. Lewis’ father Jason played for West Brom, Wigan and Cardiff, Jayden’s father Neil made his name at Crystal Palace and Bobby’s father Lee was once Newcastle’s player of the year. All three were in the side that beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final this season, with Danns and Clark going into extra time.

Figueroa has proven his appetite for goals, which is in stark contrast to his father, who scored just 22 times in a club career that saw him play 585 games. Maynor played for Wigan Athletic and Hull City when he made over 200 Premier League appearances.

Maynor scored one of the most iconic goals in the top flight when he slotted home a free-kick from inside his own half. He did so at Stoke City as his 61-yard effort went over goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

At the time, his manager Roberto Martinez said: “The technique aspect doesn’t surprise me at all because I know how Maynor hits the ball every day in training. But the arrogance of football to make that decision, to score from that free. -kick, it’s something special.
