Sporting director confirms Leeds United target to leave on free transfer, wants to move abroad

The sporting director of one of Europe’s biggest clubs has just confirmed that one of his squad’s players will leave for free this summer, shortly after Leeds United were linked with a move.

Leeds are expected to be busy in the transfer window this summer as Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his squad. What kind of player Leeds go for will be determined by Sunday’s result and whether the club will be promoted.

If Leeds secure an instant return to the Premier League with a win against Southampton on Sunday at Wembley, then one player the club should look to sign is Germany defender Marius Wolf.

The 28-year-old is about to enter the final month of his contract and is set to take a place on Dortmund’s bench on June 1 when Dortmund face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

A game will also be played at Wembley. Wolf is set to leave Dortmund on a free and Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has been quoted by Ruhr Nachrichten as confirming that Wolf will be leaving.

Sebastian Kehl confirms Leeds target Marius Wolf will leave

Reports emerged earlier this week stating that Wolf is a target for Farke’s men if the Yorkshire side are promoted back to the Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Wembley.

Compared to Brazilian legend Cafu, Wolf has managed 31 appearances for Dortmund this season and has featured in six of the Champions League’s 12 matches. But, Wolf only started twice in his six appearances.

With his six-year spell at an end, Dortmund will not offer him a new deal, as Kehl confirms to RN: “We have informed Mateu (Morey) and Marius that we will not be extending their contracts.

“Marius had different phases and made five international appearances as a BVB professional. He’s also interested in the possibility of maybe gaining new experiences abroad,” Kehl continued of Wolf.

Why Dortmund chose not to extend Wolf’s contract

So Wolf is available for free and is interesting in clubs all over Europe as well as those in Saudi Arabia. But for a player who is only 28 and has played 31 times this season, it seems a surprise that he is leaving.

However, it is claimed that Dortmund do not feel that Wolf is earning his whopping £98,000-a-week wages and so the German side have decided to offload the defender rather than try to keep him.

If Leeds do move for Wolf, they will need to be willing to pay big money in terms of wages and indeed the defender will need to take a significant pay cut for Leeds to even have a chance of arriving.
