Sheffield Wine Week to take over the city

That’s good news for wine lovers in Sheffield as the city’s first “Wine Week” will take place next month.

Despite winning honors including the ‘true beer capital of the world’, the city has had little recognition as a top wine destination – but organizers say the event will change that.

The inaugural Sheffield Wine Week will take place from Wednesday 26 June to Sunday 30 June and some of the city’s biggest bars and shops will be taking part.

The week was organized by Crookes-based city center pub The Old Shoe and Tenaya Wine in the hope of “breaking through the traditional veneer of Sheffield beer to help reveal a vibrant wine underbelly”.

Sarah Hatton and Virginia Myers, co-owners of Tenaya Wine, said: “A big part of why we opened was to try and expand the world of wine in Sheffield. I felt there was not enough wine!

“Since then, we’ve had a few new wine bars and it’s so exciting to see the wine scene grow in this great city. Sheffield Wine Week is a way to celebrate the growing appreciation for good wine here and open the community’s eyes to what’s on offer. Let’s celebrate great wine together.”

The full line-up of this week’s events has yet to be confirmed, but organizers have given a preview of what wine lovers can expect over Sheffield can be expected. On Wednesday June 26, Tenaya and St Heloise will be holding their seasonal “Supper Club”.

On Thursday (June 27), Elm will host an “Orgasmic Organic Pintxos Party.” On Friday (June 28), Starmore Boss and Naturally Wines are hosting a winemaker meet-and-greet with Italian Pierpaolo Badalucco. And on Saturday (June 29), The Old Shoe will be holding a full English take on their bottle list.

Mike Pomranz, co-owner of The Old Shoe added, “I love beer. It’s part of what originally endeared me to Sheffield. But in recent years, we’ve seen a steady confluence of premium beer, wine, cider and other beverages into one craft liquor category. Beer certainly has its merit; Sheffield already has a beer week.

“’Confluence Week’ sounds a little crazy. So ‘Sheffield Wine Week’ was the next logical step to further support all the amazing drinks on offer in the city’s bars and shops.”

The event quickly found support from the city’s top wine lovers, vendors and vendors, including Bench Le Cave, Elm, Gills & Co, The Harritt, Mitchell’s, The Pangolin, The Pearl, SHÖP by JÖRO and Starmore Boss. These founding members will be highlighted on a Sheffield Wine Week collection map, available free of charge at participating venues.

Andy Trudgill, owner of Gills & Co – a wine shop, bar and restaurant which opened on Ecclesall Road last year – added: “There are so many options for people now. from Sheffield when it comes to finding a place to try and learn more about wine. That’s why it’s so great to be part of Sheffield Wine Week, having all these independents come together to celebrate all things wine. It will be great to meet some new faces and share about who we are.”

Many of the events will be free and open to the public, but some will be ticketed or require advance booking. Check it out SITE for further information.
