Sheffield Wednesday have secured a new deal for Gabriel Otegbayo

Sheffield Wednesday have extended the contract of young defender Gabriel Otegbayo, the club have confirmed.

Sheffield Wednesday often look to give youngsters opportunities to earn deals in their youth set-up, making short-term additions outside the transfer window after successful trials.

Among those who have done so in recent months is defender Gabriel Otegbayo. The Owls signed him in March, bringing him in on a free transfer after a previous spell at the Burnley Academy.

The 19-year-old has since become a regular for the Championship U21 club, but the end of the season can be an uncertain time for academy players, with many leaving Hillsborough.

However, it has now been confirmed that Otegbayo will be staying put.

As announced by Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, the talented Irish defender has penned a contract extension with the club who has impressed since his arrival. The length of the deal is undisclosed but comes as a reward for his displays in the youth ranks in recent months.

A worthwhile stay

Having enjoyed strong form since signing for Wednesday on a permanent basis, Otegbayo’s contract extension comes as a boost for both himself and the club.

While he knows he will continue his development under the watch of a prestigious club, the Championship side retain the services of a promising player who has become increasingly important to the youngsters in recent months.

It bodes well for his future at the club and, looking ahead to next season, he will be determined to prove he is capable of breaking into the first-team picture.
