Weather expert says ‘flooding is possible’ as Huddersfield villages hit by torrential rain

Huddersfield meteorologist Paul Stevens is warning of torrential rain and flooding in parts of the city and beyond.

The former Met Office forecaster says some areas of Huddersfield – particularly around Meltham and Marsden – may be hit harder by heavy rain than others. He says the area around these two villages, which are noted for their Pennine weather, could receive up to 65mm of rain in the next 24 hours.

Paul, who is based in Huddersfield, tweeted his dire forecast this morning, saying: “We have a very wet 24 hours ahead of us with periods of heavy and persistent rain, torrential in places in far west Kirklees over the hills with northern/eastern slopes. .

“I think around 40-55mm for most and up to 65mm west Kirklees and Marsden/Meltham is possible runoff flooding. The soil is quite saturated, despite the recent drier weather.” He says the temperature will be around 14C.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued an amber warning for rain for parts of the north-west, including areas of western West Yorkshire around Meltham and towards Ripponden, as well as further west around Manchester and Liverpool. The amber warning is in effect until tomorrow.

A yellow warning is in place for the rest of Yorkshire.
