Human remains found in Mitcham’s River Wandle are believed to belong to Sarah Mayhew from Croydon

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the human remains found in Mitcham are Sarah Mayhew. Police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham shortly after 2.15pm yesterday (Tuesday 21 May) after human remains were found in the River Wandle by contractors carrying out clean-up work.

The crime scene was set up while the remains were examined. Sarah’s family have now been informed of this development. They continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts go out to Sarah’s family. We will continue to offer our support as our investigation progresses.

“I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work on site.

“Two people arrested, who were known to Sarah, were later charged with her murder. We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Investigations are ongoing.”

On April 2, human remains found in Rowdown Fieds, New Addington were identified as Sarah Mayhew. Gemma Watts, 48, and Steven Sansom, 44, were arrested on April 6 and later charged with Mayhew’s murder and preventing his lawful and decent burial.
