Sheffield United news: Opinion – the fans’ verdict on the Blades’ Premier League season

Sheffield United’s return to the Premier League was short-lived and after relegation they will return to the Championship next season.

Ben Meakin, from Blades Bridge, externalhas given its verdict on the 2023-24 campaign.

Season rating: 0/10. Three wins all season, over 100 goals conceded and seven defeats by at least four goals. I expected this season to go bad, but somehow I fell short of my low expectations.

Happy with your manager? Straight up, if Chris Wilder didn’t have a track record of success with us, he probably would have been fired months ago. But the club are going all-in on Wilder being the man to oversee an overhaul, so even as a skeptic, what can you do but cross your fingers and hope the gamble pays off?

Unknown Hero: It may seem trivial, but it must be the fans. They still show up in large numbers and we pack heads and somehow they don’t get too toxic during matches despite what we’ve been served. Yes, some of it is apathy from the way we approached this season, but the players got an (undeserved?) easy ride from those who paid to watch them.

Player you would most like to sign: We need to bring in over 10 players this summer just to have a squad next season but on my list to keep is John Egan. Securing the club captain to a new deal could be vital with so much change taking place across the rest of the squad.

Best away fans: Virtually every team that has come to Bramall Lane has had a big away party this season. Brighton were loud and sold out their FA Cup berth despite having to play us again a few weeks later – although the fact that they won those two games by a combined 10-2 probably mitigated hit excessive travel costs.
