Leeds United’s promotion back to the Premier League would be a huge boost to the club’s finances, particularly in how they manage outstanding transfer fees owed on previous deals.

Relegation from the Premier League to the Championship is always a blow to any club’s finances when they are relegated to the second tier, and Leeds were no exception.

They weren’t in as bad a position as Leicester City proved to be, but the pressure is still on both the Whites and Southampton to go up at Wembley on Sunday.

Kieran Maguire shares Leeds United financials

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has shared his latest insight into Leeds’ current financial situation, seemingly removing any PSR threshold as they look to return to the top flight.

Leeds’ losses over the past three years appear to be £80m at face value, but Maguire estimates a drop of £50m when adjustments are made.

He predicts the main problem for the 49ers is the outstanding transfer fees owed to other clubs, recently revealed to be £190m.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said:

“From the losses I have seen, I estimate over the last three seasons that Leeds United have lost around £80m.

“By the time you make adjustments for academy costs, infrastructure costs, the women’s team and commercial and community schemes, that would probably come down to around £30m.

“So I think the issues around Leeds have probably been overstated.

“A bigger concern for Leeds is that they will have significant transfer debt both this season and next due to the number of players signed on loan.

“Being in the Premier League would give them extra money to pay more easily.

That said, the 49ers will take a long-term view to provide the club with sufficient resources and cash to complete the transfers.”

The 49ers run a much tighter ship in Leeds

At the moment we are still under pressure to get back into the Premier League, you can see that when you look at how many players have been allowed to go out on loan.

However, with the 49ers in charge, we should have a lot of confidence that we won’t fall into the same traps that Radrizzani and co did the first time around.

If we go up, all of this can be largely forgotten as the money in the top flight is miles above what we have in the EFL.

If we stay down, two or three sales over £10m probably eases a lot of worries.

Quiz: Remember Leeds United’s last 15 results against Southampton before the play-off final?
