Wakefield Trinity are set to ignite the transfer market with ‘special players’ heading to the club

Wakefield Trinity are taking the Championship by storm and are very likely to secure a Super League place for 2025, but the exciting news doesn’t end there as St Mills’ recruitment manager has hinted at some “special” signings.

Trinity’s stay in Super League ended in 2023, but the club embraced their relegation and look set to come back considerably stronger.

They have been taken over by new ownership, with Matt Ellis bringing ambition, positivity and, most importantly, money to the project, and have so far been lavishly spent on players and foundations such as their stadium.

As such, Wakefield Trinity are now a completely different prospect under IMG, with the club attracting huge crowds for Championship level and often surpassing the numbers they achieved in Super League.

They have started their Championship campaign with seven wins from seven and will be looking to secure a place at Wembley with the semi-finals of the 1895 Cup this weekend. Although they have proved dominant in the second tier, Wakefield need to start recruiting for Super League, just as Leigh did under Derek Beaumont.

That seems to be the plan with Trin’s recruiting manager Ste Mills giving fans an exciting update.

Wakefield Trinity wasted no time after the May 1 deadline to announce that they have signed England international Mike McMeeken for 2025 on a four-year deal, while they are expected to bring back the former Trinity man and fellow British international Tom Johnstone.

Johnstone, who has returned to Belle Vue, has been a rumor for some time and could be one of the “special players” that recruiting manager Mills is talking about.

Speaking on the Wakefield Trinity YouTube page, Mills said: “I feel like we probably couldn’t have got off to a better start in the last two days, three days.

“We are on a really exciting journey. There will be some special players coming here, the ones the fans will really go for. Matt Ellis makes no secret of the fact that we’re trying to build a top-four club here and everything he does off the pitch for IMG.

“My job is to put together a special team on the field for Daryl and his coaches to work with. I feel like the first couple of days of this window have been successful for us and it’s going to be an interesting few months for Wakefield Trinity fans once they start to get through the ranks. “

Mills would then go on to clarify that it is a long-term project under construction at Wakefield Trinity, claiming that they have brought in Mike McMeeken on a four-year deal, hence the commitment to the project becoming one of the first four. club.

“I think a lot of what we wanted to do was build a team that would be together for a few years. Obviously, Mike comes with a four-year contract. All the coaching staff have a four-year contract.

“For us, it’s about making sure that all the work we do is a long-term plan. It’s not a two- or three-year project, this is a long-term plan to make sure we hit the targets we need.”

He noted that the current 2024 season was somewhat different for the club as the Championship season started a little later, but referred to ongoing player talks which will excite Trin fans.

“This year was a little different for us obviously coming in behind the eight ball with a late start. We had a few contracted players when we first joined the club.

“Despite that, we didn’t want to rush and bring in players who weren’t going to be part of the long-term plan we have here at Wakefield.

“We’ve got a lot of players coming forward and the aim now is to add a bit more quality to the squad to help us get into Super League.”
