Muslim father-of-four dies after friends ‘force’ him to drink two bottles of brandy in 30 minutes as loss for losing card game

A father-of-four died after he was “forced” to drink two bottles of brandy within 30 minutes as punishment for losing a card game, an inquest heard.

Umar Aziz, 35, was then placed on a chair outside a lodge where his friends took photos and videos of the inebriated father who was supposed to be drinking alcohol as ‘Jurmana’ – the Urdu word for punishment.

The 35-year-old was then put in the back of his car and locked in a compound overnight alone – all night before he was due to attend his sister’s wedding.

He was found the next day by his friend Abdul Shaqoor at 12.17am the day after he returned to the complex in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Then he took him to a nearby hospital.

The young father died from fatal levels of alcohol, having 330mg of alcohol per 1000ml of blood – more than four times the legal limit. Pathologist Dr Richard Knight said the cause of death was acute alcohol intoxication.

Aziz was carrying thousands of pounds to buy a wedding present for his brother – the money was never found, Bradford Coroners’ Court heard.

Lawyer Matthew Stanbury, representing Aziz’s family, said: “Jurmana was included as a concept in your group.” However, Shaqoor denied this and said the word actually translates to “treat”.

None of the five men present that night were charged, despite the police investigation.

MORE FROM YORKSHIRE:

The court heard that Aziz had a close group of friends, some dating back to childhood, and they frequently met to drink and smoke.

His wife of 14 years, Sadhaf Ikllaq, said her husband often came home drunk.

She told the court: “He would meet his friends and drink alcohol. Friends brought him home and carried him upstairs, but sometimes he couldn’t go up and slept downstairs.

“He never went to see his friends and didn’t come home, even if he came back at 5 in the morning. I know because I’m always waiting.

“Sometimes friends pull him out of the car. Sometimes he couldn’t stand straight and he would lean against the glass panel of the door and I would open the door.”

Shaqoor said no one offered to take Aziz home because the father-of-four allegedly told him he would book a hotel, before deciding to sleep in his car.

CCTV footage from the mosque next door captured Aziz’s final moments, with him bending over to nurse as his friends took photos and videos of him.

The coroner said Jurmana was a “childish thing to do” “given your age”.

The investigation, which is expected to last all week, continues.
