LIVE: Greater Manchester ‘danger to life’ weather warning in place – latest updates

Greater Manchester is expected to face more showers today (May 23). People are being urged to take care after the Met Office issued an amber warning for rain across the region.

The warning came into force at 12pm yesterday and lasts for 24 hours, ending at midday today. According to the Met Office, there is a potential “danger to life” from “fast flowing water or deep flooding”.




Motorists are also being warned to expect difficult road conditions, while some roads may be closed. Public transport and electricity services may also be affected by the weather.

It comes as the Environment Agency issued three flood alerts for Greater Manchester today, along with several others across the North West. One person died in a mudslide in Carlton-in-Cleveland, North Yorkshire, yesterday afternoon amid heavy rain.

While the weather warning is in place until 12pm, Manchester is expected to see rain throughout the day today. Follow the latest weather and travel updates on the blog below.

The latest on rail disruptions

National Rail is expecting disruption between Stockport and Salford until at least 9am.

East Midlands Railway customers can use their tickets for the following services at no extra cost:

  • Northern and TransPennine Express services between Liverpool and Manchester
  • Northern and TransPennine Express services between Manchester, Stockport and Sheffield

TransPennine Express customers can use these services:

  • North by any reasonable route
  • East Midlands Railway between Manchester and Liverpool Lime Street
  • Alternative TransPennine Express services between Manchester and Leeds

And for Northern passengers:

  • TransPennine Express services via a reasonable route
  • Alternative services north to New Mills Central, (where a replacement bus service operates to Chinley)

Flood Alerts

Greater Manchester has been hit by three amber flood alerts this morning, where flooding is “possible” and residents should “be prepared”, according to the Environment Agency.

Alerts are in effect at:

  • Middle Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston
  • Mersey Uplands catchment including Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton, Stalybridge and Glossop
  • Upper River Douglas from Horwich Star Vale to Appley Bridge including Adlington, Blackrod, Wigan, Standish and Gathurst

Other flood warnings are in place for Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside.

Meanwhile, there is a red flood warning in Chester and two for Brierfield and Nelson in east Lancashire – where flooding is “expected” and residents should “act now”.

Environment Agency alerts will be updated throughout the day.

Interruption of railways

Services are currently blocked between Stockport and Sheffield due to a fallen tree on the line.

TransPennine Express, East Midlands Railway and Northern services are all affected.

Meanwhile, there are delays and cancellations between Bolton and Preston following earlier airline problems, affecting Northern and TransPennine Express trains.

Other areas were affected by a less severe yellow warning for rain.

Weather warning in force

Good morning.

The North West is set for another day of rain, according to the Met Office.

It has issued an amber warning for rain in Greater Manchester, which lasts until midday.

The warning includes a “danger to life” message over possible fast-flowing water or deep flooding, which is “likely”.

Traffic, travel and power outages could also affect the region.

There are also three flood alerts in place from the Environment Agency this morning in Greater Manchester.
