Households should, according to the website, “be informed” and “make a plan.” This means doing things like finding out more about the risks in your local area, checking flood alerts and signing up for warnings.

People are also advised to work out the best escape routes from their homes in case of fire or flood, decide on a meeting point and write down important phone numbers.

In addition, households should keep emergency supplies, according to government health chiefs. Gov.uk’s page continues: “Think about what supplies you and your household might need during an emergency lasting several days, such as a power or water cut, or in situations where you are advised to stay at home or leave your home for safety reasons.
