Transfer News: Wigan Warriors man joins Hull FC

Wigan Warriors have signed Tiaki Chan off-season from Catalans Dragons. Chan has a breakout season in 2023, playing 12 times in their run to the Grand Final, where they were eventually beaten by Wigan. Chan did not play in that game and has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since his transfer.

Chan has made just three Super League appearances in the Cherry and White this season. He played in Wigan’s matches against Huddersfield Giants, London Broncos and Leigh Leopards. He recently joined Hull FC on loan, coming straight into their squad for the defeat against London.

Chan’s loan move was initially for a two-week period. However, Wigan manager Matt Peet has now clarified Chan’s situation.

Peet explained that there is no fixed deadline for Chan’s loan. Instead, Wigan and Hull will assess their position week by week to decide when Chan returns across the Pennines.

Speaking in his weekly press conference, Peet singled out Chan for praise, saying he was impressed with his attitude. Despite FC not having a game during the Challenge Cup, Chan remained at training in an attempt to win over his new teammates.

“Tiaki is determined to commit to that group,” Peet said. β€œHe was there training last week when they didn’t have a game. I think he wants to earn his stripes there and earn the respect of the Hull players and staff. Big credit to Tiaki for that.”

Chan will be part of Simon Grix’s Hull squad to face Castleford Tigers on Friday night. FC will be desperate to bounce back from a demoralizing defeat against Super League bottom side London. The Black and Whites will be hoping Chan can help lift them to just their second win of the season.

Peet also provided an update on another Wigan player who recently spent a loan spell away from the club. Sam Eseh had a short spell with Castleford Tigers before returning to Wigan. Peet revealed that he now intends to make the 21-man squad for the first time since joining the Cherry and Whites.

“If he gets drafted in the 21, I think it will be a great experience for him,” Peet continued. “To be among them, it’s worth it as it applied.

“He’s played in Super League before and I think it’s another step in his development to be in that team and around the players, experiencing, for example, the warm-up.”

Eseh joined Wigan from Wakefield Trinity in the off-season. He made 15 Super League appearances during Wakefield’s 2023 campaign, which saw them relegated to the Championship. Despite the team’s struggles, Eseh won the club’s Young Player of the Year award before moving to the Warriors.
