Erik ten Hag’s time limit is up, former Manchester United manager warns

Erik ten Hag has been left with no excuses despite the injury crisis gripping Manchester United, warns former assistant manager Rene Meulensteen.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is finding his job under increased scrutiny – although he is expected to retain his role until the FA Cup final.

The 4-0 away defeat at Crystal Palace was undoubtedly the low point of a miserable season.

Ten Hag criticized his players for not following instructions in defence, although he refused to send anyone off.

Rene Meulensteen on Erik ten Hag

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen spoke to BBC Sport following his side’s four-goal defeat at Selhurst Park.

Meulensteen said: “There was no structure, but no heart and no passion. And the worrying thing is that Erik ten Hag said they had a week to prepare for this game, so you set your plan, your tactics, your defense – but all the players have a job, whether that’s in possession or out of possession. .”

The Dutchman, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, says he believes Erik ten Hag’s time is up when it comes to reasonable expectations of establishing his style.

He described the situation as “worrying” that United had gone so far backwards in terms of style of play and performance.

“In my own experience, for any manager who is given a new team and new players, it will take about 18 months for that to sink in, to get everyone to accept your way and what you want.

“Erik ten Hag is over 18 months old and after a reasonable season last year, this should be the season where the team starts. But the problem is that they regressed.

“In 18 months, you have the players you want, you know what you want from them and they know the expectations, and then you get consistency in results and performances.

“That didn’t happen and it’s worrying to see that these are the group of players who were going to shape the future of the club.”

Erik ten Hag the long-term situation is unclear

Manchester United may resist any temptation to pull the trigger and sack Erik ten Hag now, but the Dutchman’s long-term future at the club is in doubt.

Ineos has assessed Manchester United’s form and progress and the Ten Hag have just one win in their last seven Premier League games.

Now, alongside Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton, the Ten Hag are on the ropes whether they admit it or not.

Ineos will make a decision at the end of the season, which will conclude with the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
