Football fans heading to London for the FA Cup final in Manchester on Saturday are being urged to plan their journey in advance.

The match between Manchester City and Manchester United kicks off at 3pm at Wembley on Saturday 25 May 2024.

Police say that like last year’s final between the same two teams, supporting coaches and traveling fans will be asked to take different routes to and from the final.

Manchester United coaches should take the westbound route on the M6 and City fans should follow the M1 – each club will also be required to use designated service stations.

Chief Superintendent Colette Rose, GMP Gold Commander for the event, said:

“This final promises to be a great day for our city and we want to make sure everyone enjoys the day, whether it’s in Manchester or London.

“The supporters at last year’s final were a credit to both teams – please remember that you are representing Manchester again and the match is not an excuse for anti-social or criminal behaviour.

“GMP worked closely with partners including others including the Met and West Midlands Police Forces, the UK Football Policing Unit and British Transport Police to ensure the day ran smoothly and everyone could enjoy the game safely.

“Also, please only travel to London if you have a match ticket as there are no alternative sites for fans to congregate in large numbers.

“There will be a large police presence in the city of Manchester, as we always have for high-profile events, to ensure everyone’s safety; and we will also have officers on the routes down and into London.

“There will be officers in Manchester city center throughout the day until fans return from London.

“It doesn’t matter where you plan to watch the game – don’t let a moment of poor judgment lead to a prosecution or a football banning order.

“We will take a firm approach to anyone who spoils the day of true football fans.

“If you have any concerns please speak to one of our officers who will be more than happy to assist where possible.

“Be safe, be responsible, take care of each other and enjoy the game.”
