Danny Rohl’s new Sheffield Wednesday contract could tempt one player to stay

Sheffield Wednesday are believed to be closing in on a new contract for manager Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday remain in talks with manager Danny Rohl over a possible new contract for the 35-year-old.

He and Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri have held positive talks in recent weeks, with the pair meeting in London.

And BBC journalist Rob Staton revealed on Thursday that those talks are now in their final stages, with Rohl close to agreeing new terms in S6.

Rohl’s current Sheffield Wednesday contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season.

And a new deal for Rohl could well tempt a number of other players to commit their future to the club, notably Josh Windass.

Josh Windass has offered Sheffield Wednesday a new contract

Windass, 30, was among the names offered a new contract by Sheffield Wednesday when the club announced their retained list.

But Windass previously revealed a “big component” behind him potentially extending his stay at Hillsborough was whether or not Rohl stays.

Windass said: “Danny is a big component, I think for most of the guys, to be honest. I think we feel like next year we can go to even bigger things.”

Windass has just completed his fourth full season with Sheffield Wednesday, having joined the club midway through the 2019/20 campaign.

Since then, he has scored 40 goals in total with 17 assists in 135 appearances for the Owls, with the likes of Derby County, Hull City and West Brom all linked with the striker before the summer transfer window opens next month.

Danny Rohl will be desperate to keep Josh Windass at Sheffield Wednesday

At the start of the 2023/24 season, it was revealed that Rohl wanted to keep Barry Bannan, Di’Shon Bernard and Windass at the club.

Bannan has now said on several occasions that he does not see himself leaving Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Bernard’s future could be more uncertain, however, with clubs from the Championship and Europe chasing the Jamaican international.

And Windass may be in the same boat as Championship clubs showing interest. But with the news of Rohl’s new contract, Windass and indeed the likes of Bernard could be ready to commit their future to the club.

Not only that but if Rohl stays then Sheffield Wednesday will be able to give potential new signings much more certainty about joining the club as the players will surely see how Rohl has galvanized so many individual players and want the same for themselves.
