King Charles cancels visit to Crewe as General Election campaign gets underway | Liverpool Echo

King Charles canceled plans to visit the North West on Friday.

The King was due to visit the headquarters of luxury car manufacturer Bentley, where he would gain an insight into their social and environmental sustainability strategies and officially inaugurate a new electric vehicle unit. His itinerary also included a stop at St Paul’s Community Centre, a charity that provides furniture, food, shoes and community activities to those experiencing financial hardship.

However, following the Prime Minister’s declaration of a general election on July 4, the trip was cancelled.

In response to Rishi Sunak’s surprise announcement of this summer’s general election, the royals have put engagements on hold “that may appear to distract or detract from the election campaign”, reports Cheshire Live.

Buckingham Palace conveyed the King and Queen’s “sincere apologies” to those affected after Charles on Wednesday accepted the Prime Minister’s request to dissolve Parliament for an election, marking a first for his reign.

Despite the disruption caused by the announcement of the July 4 vote, the King and Queen’s appearances at the D-Day 80th anniversary events in Portsmouth and Normandy in June are still expected to go ahead as planned. However, other events in the meticulously arranged royal journals were affected.
