Ontario native Craig Shreve’s novel The African Samurai has been selected as the SDG Reads Book of the Year. Based on the true story of Yasuke, the first foreign-born samurai in history and the only samurai ever to be of African descent, the book is expected to entertain and captivate members of the community together.

An SDG Library initiative with the slogan “one book, one community,” the event encourages SDG residents to read the book before gathering to chat with neighbors. Shreve will be at North Stormont Place on October 7 and there will be a special VIP experience for those who wish to have one-on-one time with the author. The main event will follow, where Shreve will talk about his book, answer questions from the audience and hold a book signing. A silent auction is also expected to take place, with proceeds going to SDG Reads. Participation in the event is free.

“This is an amazing event. I encourage each of us board members to attend…not to be missed. Seeing community members along the SDG is a chance for us to show our support for it and to engage and have conversations with community members,” said Coun. Tony Fraser.

“SDG Reads is a program that encourages people in the area to read the same book before coming together for an evening with the author,” said Director of Library Services Rebecca Luck. “We look forward to hearing from Mr. Shreve and encouraging everyone to come together and share their love of reading.”

The event selects a Canadian author each year to highlight the diverse talent of writers across the country, while building a sense of community through the shared reading experience.

In anticipation of the event, the SDG Library added six circulation copies of African Samurai, a book club kit containing 12 physical copies, an audiobook copy, and a non-fiction copy of African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a legendary. The Black Warrior in Feudal Japan by Thomas Lockley. The books will now be available for purchase in SDG Library branches, with funds raised going towards the event.
