Wiltshire collector is set to auction Camden Market street art doors

Reclaimed doors used in Camden Market and repainted by street artists in 2014 will be auctioned off.

The colorful set of 15 will be sold at RWB Auctions in Wiltshire and includes art by Captain Kris, The Real Dill, Fan HC and Secle Style.

The doors were taken from warehouses erected in London’s Camden Market following a fire in 2009. They were then painted by street artists, but in 2015 the buildings were demolished.

RWB Auctions said a local private collector who owned the 15 surviving doors contacted the auction house in 2023 to sell them.

Auctioneer Edd Thomas said the sheds “did the job but lacked the unique character that drew people to Camden, which had become a mecca for street art”.

“Fast forward to 2014 and ‘The Real Art of Street Art’ has secured permission to repaint the market sheds,” he said.

“There were street performers, not just from London, but from all over the UK and the world.

“Each artist was left to choose their own design and none of the participants were paid, and each basic shed face was given to reimagine it.

“Less than two years later the decision was made to redevelop the site and the wooden sheds were demolished.”

The site is now a shopping center with luxury apartments.

Mr Thomas said doors “come and go” in the auction world, but never in a collection as large as this one.

“It’s unique,” he added.

The doors will be on public display from May 23rd to June 1st at The View Gallery. During this time, they will be auctioned online.
