Sheffield Wednesday’s summer transfer business is now “based on” a “massive” thing.

Joe Crann believes Sheffield Wednesday’s summer is now “building on” something “absolutely massive”.

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a mostly excellent 2024, losing just seven of their 21 league games since the start of the year.

Despite going down to the final three games to climb out of the relegation zone, the Owls survived the drop with three points.

Now it means their summer will look completely different to how it would have been had they found themselves in League One.

However, it could still depend on one thing, and that is Danny Rohl staying at the club.

There has been talk of clubs elsewhere wanting to land the German manager for months, with Sunderland having expressed an interest since sacking Michael Beale in February.

However, Wednesday fans have received more good news recently, with reports claiming that Rohl is now “close” to signing a new contract.

The 35-year-old was expected to leave the club if promises were not made of training facility upgrades, a new addition to his coaching staff and also more transfer funds this summer.

Now it appears that Dejphon Chansiri is set to meet his demands, with Rohl set to extend his stay at Hillsborough.

Danny Rohl’s position is ‘absolutely massive’

It’s brilliant news for Wednesday, as journalist Joe Crann believes the success of their summer window “rests on” Rohl’s contract situation.

He wrote on X: “Obviously all the warnings with Danny Röhl – it’s not over until it’s over etc etc. But if #SWFC complete a long-term deal, it’s absolutely massive. Not just because of Danny, but for renewals, targets and more in the future. The success of the summer rests on it, IMHO.”

The difference between Rohl staying and going

Rohl is believed to have another 12 months left on his current contract, so even if he were to stay this season, there would still be plenty of doubt over his future.

If things don’t go as planned going forward, then he could easily be dumped and leave Hillsborough.

However, a new long-term contract would add a lot of security to the club and the players.

Josh Windass has already admitted that his new deal could depend on whether Rohl is still at the club and that could be a similar situation with many of the players currently in talks.

Without Rohl, it’s unclear whether Wednesday would end up in another relegation battle. However, there is plenty of confidence that he can take them much further if he stays.

The Owls are likely to keep hold of many of their current players if they sign a new deal, while the club will be much more tempted to join Rohl at the helm as well.

He could be the difference between staying up and even fighting for the playoffs.
