The Sheffield Wednesday star let himself go just a year after signing for the club

A Sheffield Wednesday player could now leave the club this summer, just a year after joining permanently.

Sheffield Wednesday have yet another busy summer transfer window in their sights, with a number of players out of contract at Hillsborough.

But Danny Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri will be hoping this summer brings some lasting changes to the club.

There are reports that Sheffield Wednesday are already making improvements to the training facilities at the club following positive talks between Chansiri and Rohl regarding the latter’s future at the club.

But there will still be plenty of player departures this summer. And another name now set to leave the club ahead of next season is defender Reece James.

The 30-year-old re-signed permanently last summer after helping the Owls win promotion from League One, but has since made just eight Championship appearances.

Reece James has hinted at leaving Sheffield Wednesday

Journalist Joe Crann broke the news on X Tuesday. He says left-back James only signed a one-year contract last summer, with an option for a further year.

And given his lack of game time since Rohl’s arrival, James is now “expected” to leave the S6 this summer, with Crann adding that there is plenty of interest in the former Doncaster Rovers man.

Crann posted:

Danny Rohl has one thing to watch out for at Sheffield Wednesday

James is a very popular player among Sheffield Wednesday fans. He showed his class in the Ligue 1 promotion campaign and it is surprising that he has been so overlooked by Rohl since his arrival in October.

Rohl, though, predominantly plays with a back-5, and James just doesn’t fit into that system. He is more of a standard left-back in a back-four, which is a formation rarely used by Rohl.

So it makes sense for James to move on this summer. But for Rohl, the left-back position is already very easy, with James perhaps the only natural left-back at the club, as Marvin Johnson is much more of a full-back.

So letting James go could leave that area very light and the club will need to ensure they can bring in new bodies in that position before the start of the 2024/25 season.

James’ exit could come soon enough with interest in the defender, with a move to the Championship or League One looking the most likely next step for the Englishman.

After a difficult season, he will be eager to play regular football next time around and will leave as a much-loved name among Sheffield Wednesday fans.
